Women Working with Women - Workology
Women Working with Women - Workology How to Encourage Women Supporting Women In recognition of International Womenâs Day earlier last month, I wanted to talk about how to deal with women at work who seem to want to tear each other down instead of building each other up. Personally, I had the unfortunate experience of working with a woman who was a badass. There was no question that she worked hard, however, she was so passive-aggressive with other women that it was hard to get anything done and the environment felt quite hostile. How to Encourage Women Supporting Women So how do we, as women, work with other women like this? How do we work with different personality types when it can lead to conflict? We want to encourage a mix of personality types at work, as a sea of sameness stifles innovation, but how do we stay positive when thereâs a drama queen in our midst? 40% of workplace bullies are women. #workology Click To Tweet Female bullies (40 percent of all workplace bullies) are reported to bully other women 70-80 percent of the time. One research study suggests that, with very few women at the executive level, they are compared to one another, creating competition. Women in leadership may want to avoid being seen as favoring women â" and so overcompensate. How to Overcome and Excel As a Woman in the Workplace Itâs important to recognize that itâs (still) difficult to be a woman in a leadership position in the workplace. Women are criticized for the same behaviors that are praised in men assertiveness, confidence, strong-willed, determined. Weâre called bossy, aggressive, stubborn, and, yes even bitchy. Women serve as CEOs of just 17 of the Fortune 500 companies in the United States. PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi has been quoted as saying, âThe glass ceiling will go away when women help other women break through that ceiling.â Women are just as interested in being promoted as men, and they ask for promotions at comparable rates. In fact, senior-level women ask for promotions more often than senior-level men. Despite this, women are still not advancing at the same pace as men. And external hiring is not making up the disparity in promotion rates. [Source: Women in the Workplace 2017, a comprehensive study of the state of women in corporate America, part of a partnership between McKinsey Company and LeanIn.Org.] So why does it seem like women canât play well with other women at work? For one, the acts of one member of the group can be generalized to the entire group. If someone has had a bad male boss, he or she would never say, âMen are bad bosses.â But we observe a woman undermining another woman and conclude that âwomen do that.â Also, because there are few women at the upper levels of business, there is inordinate attention given to their behavior. Additionally, many women seem to share the fear that members of their gender tend to cut one another down. Large surveys by Pew and Gallup as well as several academic studies show that when women have a preference as to the gender of their bosses and colleagues, that preference is largely for men. A 2009 study published in the journal Gender in Management found that although women believe other women make good managers, âthe female workers did not actually want to work for them.â The longer a woman had been in the workforce, the less likely she was to want a female boss. Women are wired for close friendship in which two people are equals and share intimate secrets. Businesses tend to be hierarchical, and workplace relationships are what Pat Heim calls âfriendly.â Managers demonstrate âexecutive distanceâ in their relationships with subordinates. This kind of relationship between a âlower levelâ and âhigher levelâ woman can disappoint (perhaps unconscious) expectations for close relationships. A woman may feel rejected by the senior woman. She may take it personally and dislike the senior woman. Recognize Your Own Female Biases Recognizing your own biases and consciously working to support women in leadership positions is one solution for creating a conflict-free workplace. Human resources can take the lead on this by actively promoting gender diversity programs and encouraging leadership training and support programs, like Lean In Circles, for female employees. I recently joined a company agnostic Lean In Circle in Austin, and Im looking forward to learning from the other members. Transparency can also help resolve some of these issues. If you recognize passive-aggressive behavior (or perceive it), confronting the specific behavior before it gets worse can be helpful. One way Iâve found to successfully handle this without conflict is to rely on your sense of humor and understand your own work style. For example, you can say to your boss or coworker, âIâm not sensitive to criticismin fact, I welcome and appreciate it. If I donât hear from you, I assume Iâm doing a fantastic job!â For the drama queen in the office, ignoring the behavior can often exacerbate it. Iâve seen successful women leaders nip this in the bud by getting all parties in one room and putting all cards on the table. Backstabbing canât survive in an open arena, so talking negatively about each other behind the otherâs back is nearly impossible (at least as a tactic) in an open, collaborative work environment. The bottom line: Climbing the corporate ladder and breaking through the glass ceiling can be exhausting. Itâs tempting to guard your territory once youâve reached the top. However, if we donât reach out behind us and give a hand up to other women making the same climb, it results in a lack of support for our position, backstabbing, jealousy, hostility, and passive-aggressive behavior. You can be a part of changing stereotypes and negative behaviors by setting a positive example. Awareness of the factors that lead to negative behaviors enables us to catch ourselves â" and to choose more supportive behaviors. Women can contribute to having more women at the top.

Executive Phone Interview 10 Important Techniques to Land the Offer
Executive Phone Interview 10 Important Techniques to Land the Offer Executive phone interviews are very different from an in-person or video interview and pose special challenges. When the job position you want is on the line, you need to know how to make the right impression. Employment interviews take place in person, via webcam, and on the telephone. The big difference for a telephone interview is the lack of your ability to see, or telegraph, important nonverbal cues. To some, a telephone interview is a comfortable alternative to the exposure of a video interview, or the intensity of an in-person interview. Interestingly, a survey by Software Advice found applicants who had experienced a video interview preferred video to a phone interview. A big reason for the preference is the ability to share nonverbal messaging. When you have a phone interview for an executive position, how can you use that format to your advantage? From the topâ"techniques to crush the executive phone interview A telephone interview usually means you are being pre-screened. As gatekeepers, recruiters, a hiring manager, or search committee are looking for specific abilities and traits. If you get through the phone interview, you will likely progress to a video, or in-person interview. With that in mind, your phone interview could be the most difficult dialogue you face in the application process. You must be able to communicate your brand through voice aloneâ"with the aid of your resume or CV. To ace the interview you have to manage what you sayâ"and what you do. Weâll look at both. Keep these staging tips in mind when you are scheduled for an executive phone interview: 1. Schedule the interview: While not likely, it is possible you could get a cold call from a company, or recruiter, where you expressed interest. While the request could be for a few minutes of your time, express appreciation for the call, and ask to schedule the interview on a mutually acceptable date and time. Even if later in the same day, rescheduling gives you time to collect thoughts and materials. 2. Dress the part: While it is tempting to dress down for a phone interview, do yourself a favor and play the part. A downside to a telephone interview is perceived informality. Dressing for the interview, or at least straightening up, impacts how you present yourself. Project professionalism. Other physical points include taking a brisk walk prior to the call, standing for part of the time, and speak and smile as if you were being seen in person. The physical act of smiling lightens your mood and increases your confidence. Do not multi-task during a phone interview, and keep a glass of water close by. 3. Quiet space: Be sure to locate a quiet office or other location in which to conduct the telephone interview. Ensure it is clear of interruption, noise, children, or pets. 4. Mind the phone line: To avoid dropped calls or poor connections, try to use a landline. Otherwise, be sure your phone is charged and consider using a headset to free your hands. Why? Because you can more easily review your materials and gesture if that is your habit. Create an environment for an active, participatory interview on all levels. What you sayâ"and how you say itâ"is critical in a telephone interview. Consider these suggestions for engaging your telephone interviewer: 5. Be prepared: With an executive position on the line, do not stint on preparation. Undertake an in-depth exploration of the organization, and the history of the job you seek. Be sure you understand the brand, its culture, history, challenges, financial performance, and interesting sidelights, such as key sponsorships. Research salary levels of the position, in case you are asked what salary you seek. 6. Crib notes: While lack of visual context is a problemâ"it can also work to your advantage. Keep your resume, job description, and a summary sheet of achievements nearby. Make notes of dollars saved, acquisitions made, and other relevant financial or production numbers of worth. Write quick answers to common interview questions, and be sure to include details of action taken in the face of failure or difficulty. 7. Know yourself: Be practiced and comfortable discussing achievements and the value you bring to the C-suite. Do not expect lengthy experience to get you to the next interview levelâ"be ready to explain and discuss how you provide a competitive advantage. 8. Delivery: At the outset of the interview, give the interviewer a full chance to speak. Respond throughout the call at a steady, if slow, pace. Vary the tone of your voice to express interest, curiosity, and confidence. Try not to speak excitedly because it betrays nerves and is not appropriate for a professional interview. If a difficult question comes your way, try to restate it back to the interviewer and ask if that is what they meant. Your job is to engage the interviewer in a pleasant and informative query. When the time is right, be sure to ask your own thoughtful questions about the company, and the position. 9. Name-dropping: If you know connections within the company that could help you, mention the association during the interview, if appropriate. When you have worked with industry notables, or recruited top talent for your work teams, mention names if there is a natural opening. 10. In the end: As the phone interview draws to a close, be sure to thank your interviewer, express interest in the job, and ask what the next step in the process might be. Avoid compensation discussions unless asked, and then use figures that are competitive in the industry. Follow the phone interview with a thank you email, or letter. An executive phone interview is challenging. Be prepared, and be on point, in order to position yourself to land the offer. Be well! Lisa
